HISTORY OF AWAKE 7:14
In the spring of 2011, the Midland Prayer Breakfast Team felt led by the Holy Spirit to ask Jim Denison, President of Denison Forum on Truth and Culture, to come to Midland to lead us in a time of focused prayer and learning for the purpose of awakening in our hearts and in our city.
There is a Fifth Great Awakening sweeping our world today. According to David Barrett, author of the World Christian Encyclopedia, 82,000 people become Christians every day. More are coming to Christ than at any time in Christian history
More Muslims have become Christians in the last 15 years than in the previous 15 centuries. Thousands of Muslims are seeing visions and dreams of Jesus and coming to faith in him as their Lord.
However, of the 82,000 coming to Christ every day around the world, only 6,000 are in Western Europe and North America, combined.
The number of Americans who describe themselves as "Christian" has dropped from 86% to 76% since 1990. At the same time, the number who say they have "no religion" has nearly doubled to more than 15%. The number who call themselves "atheist" or "agnostic" has quadrupled.
Why are we not seeing a great spiritual movement in Western Europe and North America?
Jesus began his public ministry with the announcement, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near" (Matthew 4:17). He instructed us to pray, "your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" (Matt. 6:10), and called us to "seek first his kingdom and his righteousness" (v. 33). When he returns, his name will be "King of Kings and Lord of Lords" (Revelation 19:16).
All through Scripture, God is a King. If he is your King, you're breathing his air, wearing his clothes, walking on his planet. He's your King on Monday, not just Sunday. He's King of what you keep, not just what you give. He's King of what you do in private, not just what you do in public.
Tragically, in our culture God is a hobby. Our society believes that Christianity is for church, religion for Sunday.
How do we make God our King? His word contains our answer:
When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:13-14).
Will we join him? Will we admit that our church and community and nation need more of God than we have known? Will we admit our need of God and humble ourselves before him? Will we seek to glorify him with everything we think and say and do this week? Will we pray every day for spiritual awakening to come to America, starting with ourselves?
A story is told about a convention in hell. Satan gathered his demons to ask how they would aid men and women in ruining their souls. One demon raised his hand and said, "I'll tell them there is no heaven." Satan replied, "That will never work. They know somehow that good should be rewarded and that their world is not all there is. You may not go."
A second demon raised his hand and said, "I'll tell them there is no hell." Satan responded, "That will not work, either. They have a conscience and know not only that good should be rewarded but that evil should be punished. You may not go."
Then a third demon raised his hand and said, "I will tell people that there is a heaven and there is a hell. But then I will tell them that there is no hurry." And Satan said, "Go!"
"One of our illusions is that the present hour is not the crucial hour." We don't have another year or another day to wait. The hour is upon us. We must seek awakening while there is still time. Tomorrow is promised to no one or any nation, including ours. Until we realize that life is war, we will not know what prayer is for.
Will you pray for Awakening?
God calls his people to humble ourselves, admitting that we need a great movement of the Holy Spirit; to pray for our nation to turn to God; to seek his face with personal intimacy; and to turn from our sins and failures. If we do, his promise is clear: "then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
God has honored his promise every time his people have fulfilled its conditions.
Each Great Awakening since 1734 has begun in prayer, because of crisis or desperation.
We must pray boldly for the power of God to extend the Kingdom of God in our Jerusalem and around the world.
Anything less is insulting to Him.
If we want the next generation to call on God, we must call on God for the next generation.
